It was the era of Paddle Steamers, Bush Rangers and Early Pioneers in the Australian Bush in a Pioneer Settlement on the banks of The Murray River at Swan Hill.Young Lucy Mackinlay had moved from Scotland with her three children after she became a Widow and travelled to Australia on board a ship called the Robert Ben to settle in Australia at her Grandfather’s homestead in Swan Hill Victoria Australia. She had lost her husband after he had had a long illness and died not long after with a Heart Attack.Lucy did not know what to expect in Australia apart from Paddle Steamers, Convicts and The Bush Rangers roaming free in the Australian Bush and causing problems for the law, but because it was such a nice country and formally her childhood home, she had spent her last lot of earnings on their tickets for Australia. They were to live with her Grandfather Captain Percy Persival, until she found a place for them all in the Pioneer Settlement at Swan Hill. Her Grandfather ran a Paddle Steamer Called The PS Farting Pelican and on board were his crew of hard workingmen. His First mate was Phillip Gray, also a local drover and Stockman at Murray Downs Homestead who also worked for Captain Persival as his head stockman. Lucy had decided to stay with her Grandfather because she was rather fond of him and because her children needed to be closer to town to attend the local Bush School there at the Pioneer Settlement in Swan Hill.Lucy had planned to visit her parents once they were all settled and organized into their new surroundings and environment at her Grandfather’s homestead.Swan Hill was wild with its bush life surroundings and was a cultivated area of River Flats and River Banks that ran beside the Murray River. The Bush environment was alive and filled with native flora where Eucalyptus Gum Trees and Wattle Trees grew. The Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement was situated at Horse Shoe End and was a heritage settlement where the sounds and smells would mirror the great pioneering era filled with craftsman, like blacksmiths, saddlers, woodturners and Cartwright’s would apply their trades to good use in the settlement when called upon to help many farmers and build the Paddle Steamers in the district of Swan Hill through to Echuca. Many People would travel around the Pioneer Settlement daily in horse drawn Buggies. The Pioneers would wander through the Beautiful Pioneer Settlement to do their shopping. The women were dressed in long dresses or skirts with pretty lacey blouses with high collars designed with material or lace and laced up boots adorned their feet to match the Pioneering era. The Men were dressed in Moleskin trousers and wore braces over their shirts and wore bush hats to keep the sun off their head and laced up boots. Read more
