In 1944's autumn, following Army Group Centre's and Fifth Panzer Army's defeats, the Volksgrenadier divisions were established to conserve personnel and focus on defense. These divisions boasted a higher ratio of automatic weapons, providing intense firepower. The Sturmgewehr 44 (StG 44) assault rifle equipped two platoons per Volksgrenadierkompanie, delivering formidable short-range power. They also received numerous Panzerfaust anti-tank weapons, effective against Allied tanks at close quarters. The MG42 machine-gun remained crucial, with two in each assault rifle-armed Sturm platoon's third squad.
