The term 'trading paint' in racing refers to high-speed collisions that leave marks on cars. Artist Richard Heeps uses this to highlight the artistic quality of his photographs. At first, they evoke futurist paintings, with echoes of abstract expressionism and pop art. However, titles like '#96 Chevy Monte Carlo' or 'Tyre Rub III' remind us of the real impacts. Shot at Rockingham Motor Speedway, the images capture 170mph impacts through pigments on bodywork and tyres. They spark debate on photography's truth: are they direct reflections or mediated versions? These images suggest both, showing real impacts while being aesthetically pleasing.
