God's Jester: The Story of the Life and Martyrdom of Father Michael Pro, S.J., (Paperback)

"God's Jester" provides a compelling and intimate account of the life, ministry, and ultimate martyrdom of Father Michael Pro, a Jesuit priest who became a symbol of faith and resilience during the religious persecutions in early 20th-century Mexico. Known for his quick wit and infectious joy, Father Pro navigated the dangers of the Cristero War era by using various disguises to continue his clandestine ministry to the Catholic faithful.

The narrative explores his journey from a spirited youth to a dedicated member of the Society of Jesus, highlighting his commitment to social justice and his deep spiritual life. As the political climate in Mexico grew increasingly hostile toward the Church, Pro returned to his homeland to serve in secret, eventually facing false accusations of political subversion. His execution by firing squad in 1927, where he died with arms outstretched in the form of a cross while crying out "¡Viva Cristo Rey!", left an indelible mark on religious history.

This work serves as both a historical record of a turbulent period in Mexican history and a poignant biography of a man who balanced profound holiness with a legendary sense of humor. "God's Jester" offers readers a powerful look at the courage of conviction and the triumph of the human spirit over oppression.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
