A stunning wooden instance of the classic Japanese ink line, or sumitsubo, a tool thought to originate from ancient Egypt and China. The sumitsubo holds spiritual significance, thus traditionally being left in newly constructed shrines or temples as a prized possession. Today, it's presented to master carpenters, who often donate it to shrines. This tool marks wood for cutting, akin to a Western chalk line. Its spacious well holds a silk cotton wad soaked in ink, which is picked up when the line is drawn through for marking.
